Enno van der Schans is a senior Dutch lawyer specializing in government liability and government compensation for compulsory purchases , planning decisions and other government decisions.

Since the mid-1990s he has been appointed as chairman of a number of independent expert committees advising government bodies and the judiciary on compensation for compulsory purchases and compensation to businesses and individuals who claim to have suffered disproportionate or excessive burdens because of government decision-making. His expertise includes government liability for the harmful impact of railway infrastructure projects, airport management projects and water management projects. His work has entailed involvement in some of the largest and most contentious projects in recent decades, including the construction of the new cargo railway line North Sea - German border (“Betuweroute”), the high speed railway line Amsterdam - Paris, the expansion of Schiphol airport and a new Amsterdam metro line.

He is a member of the Dutch Bar Association and was admitted to the Amsterdam Bar in 1970. He is also an active member of the Construction Law Association, the Construction Lawyers Association and the Association of Compulsory Purchase Lawyers.

He is enrolled as judicial expert in the National Register of Judicial Experts. He is a substitute judge in the Amsterdam District Court and arbitrator for the Netherlands Arbitration Institute. He is regularly invited to speak and lecture on subjects within his field of expertise. He is the author of several publications on compulsory purchase and government compensation.
